I found an old broken Gerber multitool in some trash about 6 years ago. One of the plier jaws had been broken off and the can opener tool had snapped off. It certainly led a hard life. I would guess it is about 15 years old.

I finally got around to sending it in to Gerber for warranty service on July 28th. I sent the bare tool (no belt pouch) along with a note describing these problems.

I got a package today:

Inside I found two belt pouches. One contained my old broken tool, the other contained a brand-new Multi-Plier 600 Bluntnose with tungsten carbide wire cutter inserts.

The warranty department has apparently 'condemned' this tool by engraving an 'X' into it. I assume they don't want to see this old tool again....an endless supply of new Multi-Pliers would otherwise be available to me!

All in all I am quite impressed with Gerber's warranty service. They replaced this broken and abused tool no questions asked. Though I found this broken Multi-Plier just a few years ago, I have another Multi-Plier MP600 that I have had for about 10 years. It has served me well. I recently upgraded to a Victorinox Swisstool Spirit, but the old MP600 still feels familiar and comfortable in my hand.

A couple of extra belt sheaths never hurt anyone... grin  Though the blade on this new MP600 wasn't going to hurt anyone either. It was one huge burr with no edge to really speak of. There were two small chips out of the edge too. Gerber Legendary Blades sent me a Blade that was less than Legendary.

15 minutes on the Sharpmaker and this guy will shave hair now.  At least the steel sharpens up nicely. Would have been nice of them to ship it sharp to begin with though.

I have a Legend 800 that I broke a couple of years ago. I finally got around to ordering new parts for it, but I was told I couldn't order parts anymore because of "liability concerns" -- so I sent the tool in, mods and all, with a detailed list of everything I wanted to have fixed. They sent me back my tool along with a defective new one -- which just happened to have all of the parts I needed, in good working order. So I fixed my tool myself using parts from the busted one. Good as new.

A multi tool is a versatile piece of equipment that has many valuable uses in the field or in a survival scenario. If you were boiling a can of water, you could use the pliers to grab hold of it without burning your hand. The pliers on a multi tool will be used more than you think in the field or on a camping trip. You can take the hook out of a fish. In a survial scenario, the wire cutters can snip the snare wire for you. The screwdriver can be used to repair other gear or equiment. And of course the knives have multiple uses as well.
